The PACE Program- Helping Elders live in the Community

By Kathy L. McNair, Esq.

I had the pleasure of spending a day at a PACE (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly) Adult day program in Boston, while assisting one of my clients in applying for enrollment in the program. Although, I often advise clients on applying for MassHealth, this was my first opportunity to see the PACE program in action. I was very impressed by the comprehensive services offered and the care and attention of the staff. PACE is a wonderful way for seniors to continue living in the community and stay engaged with others. There is a doctor, a nurse, a social worker, a physical therapist and other professionals on-site to ensure the well being of the seniors. In addition, they provide fun and engaging one on one and group activities and lunch. The day program ends around 2pm.

PACE also provides assistance paying for Assisted Living Facilites and can make the difference between needing nursing home care and being able to continue living in the community. For the client that I assisted in applying for the program, it will enable her to continue living in her Assisted Living Facility, even though her private funds have been exhausted. As a single woman, without family in the area, this support is critical. For more information about how to quallify for the PACE program, please call our office.
